The Sacrament of Penance, also known as Confession or Reconciliation, is a powerful encounter with God’s mercy and forgiveness. Through this sacrament, we are reconciled with God and the Church by confessing our sins to a priest, expressing true contrition, and receiving absolution. Confession restores the grace lost through sin and strengthens us to live more fully in God’s love.
Jesus instituted this sacrament when He said to His apostles, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20:23). In James 5:16, we are also encouraged to “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” Rooted in Scripture and sustained by tradition, Confession is an essential part of our journey toward holiness and spiritual renewal.
