The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacred encounter with Christ’s healing presence, offered to those who are seriously ill, facing major surgery, or experiencing the frailty of old age. Through the prayers of the priest and the anointing with holy oil, the Church entrusts the suffering person to the mercy of God, asking for strength, peace, and—if it is God’s will—physical healing. This sacrament also unites the sick to the Passion of Christ and offers spiritual grace for the journey ahead.
In accordance with Canon Law, anyone in danger due to illness, surgery, or age may receive this sacrament—and it may be received again if the condition worsens (cf. CIC, can. 1004). If there is any doubt as to the seriousness of the illness or condition, the sacrament is to be received (cf. CIC, can. 1005). The Catechism of the Catholic Church also adds that it is also appropriate to receive the sacrament prior to surgery (cf. CCC, 1515).
Homebound Ministry for the Sick: For those who are homebound, only those who live within the parish boundaries will receive homebound ministry on a weekly basis. Due to Diocesan Policy, Eucharistic Ministers are prohibited from administering the sacrament of Communion to registered homebound parishioners outside of the boundaries of 22192. With that said, those who live outside of our parish boundaries may receive the sacrament of Communion from our priests on an infrequent basis (generally monthly and not on Sunday).
If you or a loved one is in need of the Anointing of the Sick or would like to arrange homebound ministry, please contact the parish office. We are here to walk with you and offer Christ’s comfort in times of illness and need.
