Cantors are individuals who sing solo verses or passages to which the choir or congregation responds. This would include various parts of the ordinary of the Mass (kyrie, responsorial psalm, gospel acclamation, etc.). If serving at a Mass without a choir, the cantor would also be a soloist who leads the singing in all the hymns at that Mass. Cantors are not required to read music, but most have good working knowledge of music, good projection, and be comfortable singing solos.
